I grew up in a small farming community in northwest Iowa.  My parents supported and encouraged college as a means to a better life.  Thankfully, financial aid and merit scholarships made college possible, along with some loans.  My Work-Study job during college was in the Admissions and Financial Aid office.  I am grateful for the opportunities my education provided me along with a Work-Study job that led me to a career path.  I realized through my student job that I could help others fulfill their dreams of a college education. My current role in Student Financial Aid allows me to help students and families navigate the funding process and also to help them be aware of campus resources to support their student success.  I encourage first generation students to take advantage of all the opportunities and support resources available on campus.  Ask questions.  Faculty and staff want to help!  Tutoring is as much for the student who wants an “A” rather than a “B” as it is for a student who may be failing.  Most importantly, I encourage them to believe in themselves and the fact that they belong here.  Go Hawks!  I look forward to seeing our first generation students cross that stage at graduation and go on to be role models for the next group of students.
