First-Gen Student Success

Hundreds of University of Iowa faculty and staff have volunteered to serve as mentors and advocates for first-generation students by participating in the 1stGen@Iowa Mentor Network. Mentors are listed on our website so first-gen students can easily find and contact them directly.

TRIO Student Support Services (TRIO SSS) serve students at the University of Iowa who demonstrate academic need and are first-generation, low-income, or have a verified disability. TRIO SSS creates a welcoming environment that supports students and inspires them to reach their fullest potential and be successful in all their academic and personal endeavors through graduation.

First Gen Hawks provides new first-generation Hawkeyes a way to engage in activities that enhance the college experience within and beyond the classroom through experiential learning or learning by doing. New first year, first-gen students can join by logging in to their Admissions Profile on MyUI and completing the interest form for First Gen Hawks.
