First-Gen Student Success

Are you a first-gen undergrad, grad, or professional student who plans to graduate in December 2025? Don't forget to grab your FREE first-gen graduation cord as our gift to you. Cords are available at the IMU Welcome Center from December 8 - 19. 

Established in 2019 by the 1stGen@Iowa Faculty and Staff Collaborative, formally the First-Generation Task Force, the 1stGen@Iowa Awards recognize first-generation student achievements as well as outstanding advocacy and support efforts of faculty and staff. 

TRIO Student Support Services (TRIO SSS) serve students at the University of Iowa who demonstrate academic need and are first-generation, low-income, or have a verified disability. TRIO SSS creates a welcoming environment that supports students and inspires them to reach their fullest potential and be successful in all their academic and personal endeavors through graduation.

First Gen Hawks provides new first-generation Hawkeyes a way to engage in activities that enhance the college experience within and beyond the classroom through experiential learning or learning by doing. New first year, first-gen students can join by logging in to their Admissions Profile on MyUI and completing the interest form for First Gen Hawks.
