First Gen Hawks is a dedicated program at the University of Iowa, designed to support and celebrate first-generation college students. In this program, first-year students are provided a comprehensive range of resources and activities to enhance the college experience both inside and outside the classroom.
Through academic coaching, peer mentoring, community events, scholarships, and experiential learning courses, First Gen Hawks equips students with the tools and support they need to thrive academically, socially, and professionally.
The program fosters a sense of belonging and empowers first-generation Hawkeyes to achieve their goals and make a meaningful impact on campus and beyond.
ACADEMIC COACHING
Personalized support for academic success. Academic coaches help set goals and track progress, while also working on skills development like time management, planning, and navigating college life.
PEER MENTORING
Gain guidance from experienced peers. All First Gen Hawk Peer Mentors are First Gen Hawks who have successfully completed their first year and are available for support and connections.
MATCHED EMPLOYMENT
Matched employment opportunities are designed to provide first-generation students with meaningful work experiences that complement their academic goals and career aspirations.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Donors provide guaranteed scholarship support to first-generation college students, helping remove financial barriers and ensure a strong start at the University of Iowa.
FALL SEMINAR
Designed to help students be successful now and through the future, this class focuses on self-efficacy and experiential learning through leadership and engagement, mentored campus employment, and undergraduate research.
