I'm from a blue-collar family and grew up in rural, Northern Iowa. Getting to college involved some intention, and also some happenstance. Though college was unfamiliar to my family, education was always extremely important. I had the unique pleasure of seeing my mom graduate with her BA about 5yrs after I did. Since then, I have also earned a graduate degree--another mysterious process--and have made a career out of supporting graduate students at Iowa.
