Biography

Anna L. Bostwick Flaming had the pleasure of getting to watch both of her parents earn undergraduate college degrees, and she was the first to attend and graduate from university as a traditional college student. She jokes that she's been in college her whole life, from "helping" her mom study for gen ed western civ as a child to eventually earning a PhD and making a career in higher education. As the director of the Center for Teaching, Anna leads a team of educational developers in designing programs that center equity and excellence in teaching and learning and support faculty, graduate student, and organizational development. At the University of Iowa, Anna is a member many institutional boards and committees, and was a founding member of the Provost’s Task Force on First Generation College Students. Anna’s scholarly interests include inclusive teaching, active learning, course design, curriculum design, the Scholarship of Educational Development (SoED), the history of higher education, and the history of gender. Her work has appeared in publications including the International Journal for Academic Development, the Journal on Centers for Teaching, To Improve the Academy, and EDUCAUSE Review. She served four years (chair-elect, chair for 2 years, and past-chair) leading the Professional and Organizational Development (POD) Network in Higher Education’s Scholarship Committee, which supports the POD Network’s strategic goal of “advancing evidence-based practice." Anna is affiliate faculty in the Department of Gender, Women's & Sexuality Studies.
