Bren Linley

Sr. Academic Advisor & Adjunct Instructor, Microbiology, CCOM
Biography

I am a first-generation college student who grew up on a farm outside of Shellsburg, IA. My early years were shaped by the values of hard work and community intrinsic to rural life. Transitioning to the University of Iowa was a significant challenge. The shift from a small-town farm to a university environment was overwhelming, and I initially struggled to find my place. However, my journey took a positive turn when I became a resident assistant in the residence halls. This role helped me adjust and ignited a passion for helping others navigate their own college experiences. My experience as a resident assistant paved the way for my current position as an academic advisor and instructor of leadership studies courses. In this role, I draw on my own experiences to support and guide students, particularly those who, like me, may be the first in their families to attend college. Teaching leadership studies allows me to empower students with the skills and confidence they need to succeed both academically and personally. After graduating from college, I came out as a lesbian. This was a pivotal moment in my life, marking the beginning of a journey towards living authentically and embracing my true self. My personal experiences have deeply influenced my approach to advising, teaching, and fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all students.
