Biography

I am a first-generation college graduate but I didn't know I was first-gen when I was in college. That term wasn't really discussed. As I went on to pursue working with college students as a career, I started to learn about first-generation students and so much of my college experience started to make more sense. I was lucky to find great mentors along the way to help me but I know that's not the case for everyone. That's why I choose to support first-gen students now. I understand the uncertainty and uneasy feelings that come when it seemed others around me had it all together and knew what they're doing. Find that support network--even if it's just one person. Leverage that connection for good and when you're able, give back. Prior to my role in the Carver College of Medicine, I worked with UI TRIO Student Support Services for 6.5 years, serving as the director for 5.5 years of that time. I had the privilege of seeing 1stGen@Iowa be built from the ground up and am proud to be a small part of this amazing network.
