Hi, and welcome to the University of Iowa. I am originally from Holstein, Iowa, a rural town in northwest Iowa with ~1,500 people. I am a first-gen student from a single parent and low SES family and I know that part of the reason I was able to be successful at Iowa was because I had older brothers here during my first two years of college. I also know that not everyone has a sibling or close connection that can fill that role. I would not be where I am today personally and professionally without the support of family, advisors, instructors, and other mentors. As a first-gen mentor, I am excited to meet you and pay it forward.
