Biography

I grew up below the poverty line in Southern Appalachia. For many in my community, college was out of reach for systemic reasons. I was fortunate to attend an "elite college" for undergraduate on a scholarship, but I found that the college was designed to support students from wealthier backgrounds while many of us from poorer areas and schools were left to flounder. This has heavily informed my commitment to supporting first-generation students, and in particular those from low-income backgrounds. It's not enough to get people in the door at universities, we must support you and help fill in gaps and academic cultural norms that may not be immediately apparent to those who have not been trained in it.
