Valerie Garr
As an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the College of Nursing, I teach and guest lecture to help prepare nursing students with the global skills necessary to care for different patient populations within complex health systems. I also teach leadership to students of all majors through the UI Pomerantz Career Center’s Career Leadership Academy Program.
As an Academic Services Specialist at the College of Nursing, I coordinate the College’s Supplemental Instruction and NEST Tutoring Program, offering academic support to UI nursing interest students and first-year BSN students enrolled in high-risk core science foundation courses. I also oversee the BSN Admissions Essay Workshop, assisting second-semester nursing interest majors who are applying through the UI BSN standard admissions process. I also advise the College’s Multicultural Nursing Association student organization.
I enjoy helping students of all majors navigate their own definition of success and achievement on our campus as they develop their voice, leverage their self-advocacy, explore and implement their strengths and leadership, and plan their life/career goals.
I have worked at the UI for 38 years and I am a proud double alumnus of the UI from the Quad Cities! In my free time, I enjoy painting abstract art, listening to my very eclectic record/CD collection, and playing Scrabble. Got game?
