I'm a first-gen student myself. But my appreciation for and commitment to support first-gen students started after working with two first-gen students at Iowa. They showed me their willingness to work hard towards a goal that they were often not made aware of, because their family and friends didn't have those experiences. I realize that I could use my expertise and resources to help more such students reach their goals.
