Biography

Supporting first-generation students is important to me because there was little support for first-generation students when I began my academic journey. My parents' goal for their children was the opportunity for each of us to attend college because they did not have that opportunity. In line with their goal, I attended Penn State University for undergraduate studies, only knowing that I enjoyed biology in high school. During this period, I enjoyed classes but felt I never took full advantage of the research labs and the university, mostly because I was naive to these opportunities. At the end of my undergraduate studies, I decided to pursue working in a lab because I enjoyed science. I haphazardly applied to graduate school without guidance, resulting in only one invitation for an interview. I joined the Neuroscience graduate program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and never looked back. At this time, I first received mentoring, and I finally felt like I could have a career in science. Through this program, I hope to provide details and feedback for first-generation students earlier in their careers than my experience. I hope to be an understanding listener and provide meaningful insights for first-generation students at the University of Iowa.
