Biography

Tomeka Petersen is the Admissions and Program Coordinator at the School of Social Work. She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology at UMASS Boston and her MSW at Simmons College School of Social Work. Tomeka was a non-traditional student that started her academics at a community college attending evening courses while working full-time. Through the encouragement of an instructor, she applied to a four-year college. Tomeka’s professional social work career has been unique. She served in a variety of settings including an outpatient mental health center and an elementary school in Maine; UIHC dialysis unit in Iowa City; Peace Corps Kenya; the AIDS Project Quad Cities; a large partnership with Indiana University and Moi University Medical Schools in Eldoret, Kenya; The WiderNet Project at UI (2010 –2013); Ponseti International Association at UI (2013-2017) and now at the School of Social Work since 2017.
