Nozomi Tanaka

Associate Professor, Department of Linguistics
Biography
I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics, specializing in the acquisition of morphosyntax—that is, the study of how we learn sentence structure, whether as children or as adult language learners. I also direct a lab. You can find more details here: https://nozomitanaka.com/lab/

As a woman of color, a former international student, an immigrant, and a speaker of English as a secondary language, I understand some of the challenges of navigating the U.S. academic system and the struggles of feeling as though you don’t quite belong. If you resonate with any of my experiences or share similar identities, please feel free to email me. I’d be happy to chat.

Are you looking for research experience? I am actively seeking both undergraduate and graduate students interested in engaging in linguistic research. Even if you're not familiar with linguistics, if you speak languages that we are currently working on in our lab (specifically Japanese and Tagalog), you might be able to help. Feel free to reach out.

Are you interested in languages or curious about linguistics? I’d also be happy to chat with you!

Growing up in the Philippines, I never imagined where I would be today. Education has opened many doors for me, and I hope it can do the same for others. Mentoring brings me a great deal of joy—I love seeing students grow and succeed, but I value the opportunity to learn from them in return, especially as they share perspectives I may not have considered before. Outside of work, I enjoy coffee, reading (especially mystery novels), puzzles, video games, and watching sports and musicals.
