I am a Clinical Assistant Professor and Director of Practicum Education with The University of Iowa School of Social Work. I joined the UI faculty in 2024 and was appointed Director of Practicum Education in April 2026. Prior to returning to Iowa, I served as an Instructor with The University of Alabama School of Social Work for more than six years. I am originally from Eastern Iowa and a proud graduate of both the BSW and MSW programs at the University of Iowa School of Social Work, so it has been especially meaningful to return home and to my alma mater.

As Director of Practicum Education, I provide leadership for the School’s practicum education program and work closely with students, faculty, staff, practicum instructors, and community partners to create meaningful learning experiences that prepare students for professional social work practice. I am passionate about strengthening practicum education, supporting students throughout the placement process, and building collaborative relationships with the agencies and professionals who help educate the next generation of social workers.

My social work career spans more than 20 years, with much of my practice experience at the macro level. From 2014–2017, I served as a Program Manager for a HRSA-funded initiative with The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, Division of Child and Community Health. In that role, I led a statewide initiative to develop Iowa’s first state-level strategic plan for autism programs and services across the lifespan. My professional experience also includes program development and evaluation, grant writing, older adults, children and youth with special health care needs, hospice and end-of-life care, family caregiving, dementia, and grief. I have worked with both for-profit and nonprofit hospice organizations and have presented on many of these topics.

Teaching continues to be an important part of my role. Courses I have taught include Engaging with Evidence and Program and Practice Evaluation, and I especially enjoy helping students see how research, evaluation, and evidence can inform effective social work practice. Since being appointed to this new role in April, I primarily teach courses related to practicum. 

My own educational journey also shapes the way I work with students. I was a first-generation, nontraditional college student who transferred to the University of Iowa from a community college. I understand that students arrive at the University with different experiences, responsibilities, strengths, and challenges. I value the opportunity to help students navigate their education, connect with resources, develop their professional identities, and find meaningful ways to translate classroom learning into practice.

Outside of the University, I enjoy spending time with my family—especially my grandchildren.
